4 Steps to Balance your Inner & Outer Wealth
Balance is a fundamental law of nature and psychological well-being. I discussed this concept in my previous article which you can read here.
Imagine you’re at the gym but only work on your right arm, relentlessly building the muscles to resemble Arnold Schwarzenegger while your left arm stays thin. Not only would you look strange, you would also be fundamentally out of balance.
I have worked with many successful, wealthy people. They are often uncomfortably aware of the lack of balance between their outer world of success and their inner world of personal satisfaction.
I had a client many years ago who said, “I must be a success; it’s essential that I am a success; I’ve spent my whole life chasing success”. When I asked why it was so important, he looked at me and seemed stunned. I repeated the question, and he replied, “I’ve never really thought about that”. He had been driven to succeed for over 20+ years without actually knowing why.
Socrates said, ‘The unexamined life is not worth living’. As a successful person, you go into negotiations and business activities fully prepared, equipped with all the information you need to reach the best outcome. However, you only live half a life unless you explore your inner world and understand who you are. You wouldn’t go into battle with one arm behind your back, yet many successful people are totally externally focused and miss the holistic benefits of combining their inner and outer worlds of success and wealth.
So how do you do this? Working with a coach or other professional can redress the balance and supercharge your success and life satisfaction. You’re probably familiar with the iceberg concept, where 20% is above the water and 80% is below the water. The 20% represents our external behaviour and within the other 80% are our attitudes, values, beliefs, assumptions, cultural, societal, and personal influences. These invisibly drive how we make meaning from our experience and decision-making process. Becoming aware of these invisible forces is an enormous advantage in life and business, allowing you to discover more about yourself and your relationships with others.
After 30 years as a coach, I’ve recognised that the four steps to life and work success are:
- Understand yourself by engaging in the process of exploration and personal development.
- Accept your strengths, weaknesses, positive and negative behaviours.
- Become aware of your needs and then choose whether to get your needs met or go with the needs of the environment.
- Have productive and assertive relationships with the world.
In countless surveys of people of all ages and from all walks of life, doing things for others is the most satisfying life experience. The win-win is to give to yourself through inner-world exploration and then utilise the strength of your authenticity and humanity to support others. By improving your inner balance in line with your external strength, you will be at the (life) gym working equally on both arms, feeling good about yourself and being appreciated by others.
